North Terrace Retrofit
Located in the heart of Cambridge, opposite the green space of Midsummer Common, North Terrace is a sustainable remodelling of a 1970s end terrace plot.
The project focused on significantly updating the existing end terrace property, making simple moves such as rearranging the existing staircase that allow the building to reach its full potential and take advantage of the views across the Common. The movement of the staircase has allowed fo
n improvement of the flow through the existing spaces in the house as well as opening up a double height space that connects the first floor living room down to the living room and kitchen below. The colours introduced into the interior of the scheme take reference from the landscape of the common opposite. The scheme includes bespoke fitted furniture to compliment the revised layout. The kitchen includes pull out sections acting as divider
ith iridescent reflective panels for tea and coffee when the rowing club visits. The new tea cupboard on the second floor removes the need to go down two flights of stairs for that all important morning cup of tea
rucially, the building has been updated significantly from a sustainability perspective, now incorporating additional insulation, improved airtightness and triple glazed windows. In addition to material upgrades, the clients were able to benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive government grant and installed an air source heat pump, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery, photovoltaic panels on the roof as well as Sunamp battery storage. Thi
as both lowered operational carbon for the building and the associated running costs.
